About Lumo

Lumo helps self-employed Canadians handle the business side of working for themselves — starting with the tax bill.

What it does

When you’re paid without tax taken off, part of every payment is tax you’ll owe later, and nobody tells you how much until the bill arrives. Lumo works out what to set aside as money comes in, so the bill is a number you already know.

It takes your records however you can manage to give them: a total you added up by hand, your receipts, or a bank statement. It does the calculations, shows you what’s still missing, and at the end of the year puts together a complete package for whoever files your return.

Who it’s for

Massage therapists, plumbers, hairstylists, electricians, trainers, photographers, consultants, subcontractors — anyone in Canada who gets paid without tax taken off. Plenty of them don’t think of themselves as running a business, and Lumo doesn’t ask them to.

What it doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t file anything with CRA. Your tax professional does that, with the package Lumo prepares.
  • It doesn’t give tax advice. It gives you information and estimates, and every projected number is marked as an estimate.
  • Some questions — whether to incorporate, or how to pay yourself from a corporation — depend on your whole situation. Lumo explains why the question matters and suggests taking it to a tax professional.

Where your information lives

In Canada. What you tell Lumo about your money is stored in Montréal, it isn’t sold, and it isn’t handed to anyone for their own purposes. The privacy notice has the detail.

Where it is now
